This fictional awards show is the first annual Shoegaze Awards, which celebrates musical achievements in the genre of shoegaze. Shoegaze, or shoegazing, originated in late 1980s United Kingdom with bands like My Bloody Valentine and Cocteau Twins. It's identifiable by its usage of guitar looping, walls of distortion and sound, and dreamy, muted vocals. I wanted to celebrate this unique and niche music genre as well as its aesthetics, which usually involve nostalgic, suburban imagery, motion trails, and altered colors.
My approach was to shoot footage and then alter the speed and color and then add grain and noise to enhance the nostalgic vibe of the video. With the type, I wanted to loosely reference Raygun Magazine and 1980s grungey album covers. As a whole, I wanted the video to evoke the feeling of turning on MTV late at night and watching shoegaze music videos, not sure if you're awake or not because of how dreamlike they are.
