Polyhymnia is a high end, sustainable fragrance brand named after the Greek muse of lyrical and hymnal poetry. This brand is influenced by classical Greco-Roman ideas and literary references. The target market is middle class and upper middle class women with an interest in art, literature, and sustainability. Because of the brand’s focus on literature, 30% of all proceeds are donated to underfunded libraries. Each fragrance is inspired by a specific poem or excerpt of a book.
In the case of this fragrance launch, the inspiration is a quote from Sylvia Plath’s novel, ‘The Bell Jar,’ where her main character sits beneath a fig tree. Each fig is a symbol of a potential future and, overwhelmed by choices, the character starves as each fig turns black and falls to the ground. This fragrance is a positive take on this idea, giving the customer an easy choice to begin their day, encouraging them to be decisive in the rest of their life. This package will be handed out to customers who spend over $50 at local Sephora and Ulta stores a week prior to the launch. The package includes information about the brand, fragrance, and launch event as well as a solid perfume sample. By RSVPing in advance, the customer will receive a personalized bottle of perfume at the launch event.
This project was accepted into the 2020 DSVC National Student Show in the Special Events Materials Category.
The concept behind this project was the blending a Greek aesthetic and the idea of a handmade poetry book. I used ivory textured paper to imitate the look and feel of old books and a handmade rice paper cover with cutouts on strategic words for the cover to reference the trend of blackout poetry. The typography is meant to be expressive and loose and I used a typewriter-inspired typeface to give the impression of a handmade book. I also made stamps from hammered leaves and a Japanese binding style to further the feeling that this booklet is from the desk of an artistic writer.
