‘The Ooz’ is a 2017 album by English musician Archie Marshall, under the pseudonym King Krule. This cel animation is a promotion for the album, intended to be used on the artist’s social media and, potentially, as an ad on YouTube.
The style of this promotion is inspired by Marshall’s own visual art, which is loosely rendered and dark in color, often utilizing white on black. The album features imagery and metaphors revolving around space and has themes of dissatisfaction, longing, and alienation. Though the genre is difficult to pin down, overarching stylistic influences include trip hop, jazz, and post rock. The song I selected to represent the album is ‘Biscuit Town,’ which discusses the artist’s hometown of Bermondsey in London, England. For the animation, I kept the style loose and the imagery spacey and dreamlike to reflect the themes and mood of the song.
